No regrets after much deliberation December 6, 2009 David Fairweather (Gloucestershire, England.) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have used an older Belkin wireless router for a couple of years which I bought just because it was cheap. It performed quite well but cut out regularly, requiring the time honoured turn it off and on again treatment. Wanting to upgrade to a better router I looked at a alternatives wishing to buy a more 'upmarket' and reliable router. The choices were bewildering. After a month of indecision, a mistaken purchase (thanks to Amazon for their superbly efficient returns service), and a sense of foreboding regarding the trouble of installing another router, always descibed as only a 5 minute job, but which invariably takes 3 hours, my kids were getting impatient for a better router. So to save face if nothing else I had to make a decision. After carefully reviewing models and customer reviews I had to conlcude the Belkin N seemed to offer the best value. So on the allotted D day I pressed the order button and awaited delivery. Several days later it arrived, and still with that sense of foreboding postponed installation for a few days until the weekend, when I would prepare myself mentally for the expected challenging ordeal. Saturday came and went, Sunday morning drifted into that Sunday afternoon lethargy. I could put off the evil task no longer. So with the feeling of a condemned man walking to the gallows I opened the box and began the installation procedure.
It all seemed too easy - all I had to do was plug in the cables, insert the CD abd follow instructions. Well, much to my amazement it was that easy. Just like it says in the blurb within about 10 minutes or so I was up and running on the main PC. That was too easy - laptops won't possibly work. I turned on my laptop and sure enough 'no device available'. So in an act of desperation I turned my laptop off and on again, and lo - wireless device detected - signal strength 'very good'. I checked with my younger son and he said his was working. And older son's laptop. It seemed we had ignition, successful launch, and were now in orbit - all systems go.
And a week later it has performed faultlessly - no cutting out, good signal strength in all parts of the house. And being an older house we have real walls made of bricks and stuff. Being a cynical old git I resent giving anything full marks. So when deciding on the number of stars to award i could not criticise the Belkin for anything. The speed was only 100 mbps on the PC and only 54 on the laptop, but that is probably the limitations of rural Gloucestershire's broadband connection. Speed and signal strength is consistent and strong. So I asked sons for their opinions. 'No problems' were their replies. So I had no option but to award the full 5 star rating. Well done Belkin.
But it has only been a week - plenty of time to go wrong yet! Watch this space.
UPDATE - It's now 23rd Jan 2010 and the Belkin N is still working faultlessly. No regrets at all.
Easy setup and good value for money October 15, 2009 Damon (UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I've had several Belkin router products before and all have performed for me without issue. This latest device allowed me to make the move up to N specification for the wireless network. Testing this in a "old" house build around 1900 (thick walls), I was able to watch TV streamed to a laptop across several rooms.
Setting up the router was easy with a step by step guide. The only issue I had was when trying to connect to a Playstation 3, where I couldn't use my chosen security protocol and I had to drop back to using WEP encryption to get the two devices to talk to each other. Once I'd made this change then everything has worked solidly since.
Good Router May 27, 2009 Mr. Raoul C. Du Valle (Cheshire, UK.) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
When I ordered this I was in fear of setting it up when it arrived. No need to worry within five minuets it was up and running. The easy walkthrough instructions on the disk where very clear and simple. I am running three computers from it and storage, nothing could have been easier, well done Belkin. My internet speed has increased, much better than my older modem. Thoroughly recommended to anyone with no technical no how, like me.
Excellent-no problems at all January 12, 2010 P. K. Kellett 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My old setup consisted of the original BT Home Hub version 1.0 (the white box) with BT broadband, and although it worked ok, i knew the speed was an issue and seemed a lot slower than it should have been. I own an Xbox360, PS3, iMac and a laptop so i wanted a new modem router that could cope with this little lot.
Like another reviewer on here, i looked about, did some research and having had a Netgear before (and a somewhat mixed time with it) i decided to go for this Belkin. Fully expecting a day of my weekend taken out trying to get the product to work i was amazed at how easy this was to set up.
One word of warning though, to initially install this modem you need an ethernet cable, which does come in the box, but to fire this thing up and initialize the router, its best just to simply plug it into your pc/applemac right next to where your computer is and not where you might place the modem in the end ie: upstairs, as the ethernet cable is very short.
The instructions are clear, easy to follow, and the install disc which is for both PC and Mac, guides you through the installation process in about 5 minutes. Have to hand your Broadband provider login name and password as the process may ask you for this. It does also ask you for which ports you need, and i just left mine on the suggested ones (there are 2) but it fired up fine. Once you have completed the process and you can access the net (still with the cable plugged in) its then a case of setting up each piece of equipment. I then did the Xbox, PS3, iphone and netbook, and all of them found the Belkin wirelessly no problem. Set them up and you are away. I had no problem with the Xbox or the PS3.
Once each one is done, you then need to re-insert the ethernet cable back into your PC or Mac and into the modem to set up the security. The book suggests you set up the router first on each product, then go back and set up the security so this i did. Again, the install disc has a security setup assistant and it might be worth noting that during this phase it said it couldnt set up a security code for this modem. I found that i needed to switch off the modem, wait 20 seconds, and once it fired up (ethernet wire still attached) it went through the security process no problem. You can have WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc and i chose WPA2. Put my new code in, folowed the process and was done.
At this point you simply go back to the Xbox, PS3, laptop etc and put in the new code. Job done, a secured network.
Once it was fired up, the speed and signal strength was amazing. Its only since setting this up that i realise how slow the old BT Home Hub was. The iMac is N wireless supported and so is the laptop, but even the Xbox and PS3 download demos and videos ten times quicker than before. I have also noted that ive got an OPEN nat on the xbox in games like MW2 and thats without even having to change anything. Even my iPhone connects quicker and everything seems to stay connection virtually at a 100% download rate.
Im very happy with this product, easy to set up, very fast and great signal strength (im about 30ft away from the router with peripherals) if you are thinking of upgrading yours then i can recommend this totally.
With relief December 28, 2009 Mr. Peter Adamson (oxford UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had anticipated problems installing a new modem router and connecting 3 PCs wirelessly. Within five minutes of opening the Belkin box the job was done. Other than following the easy instructions, all that was required was a re-start of one of the PCs. Exellent product.
