Works well for my needs August 30, 2008 Siggy 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've had this for almost a week now and have to say that I'm very pleased with my purchase.
I wanted to set up a wired network so that our 3 machines (2 laptops and a PC) could all access the internet at the same time, via one phone line.
Setting up was very easy. All that was required was to replace my existing, external modem with the Belkin, connecting it to my laptop via the ethernet cable provided and then connect from the phone line to the Belkin.
Next, just type in the address (from the enclosed leaflet) in explorer's address bar and on-screen instructions take you through the set-up (you basically need your user name that your ISP accepts).
Next, just connect via ethernet cables to the other computers. A couple of on-screen clicks and it's done (the set up on the first machine doesn't have to be repeated for the others).
And that's it! So far, no problems and no loss of connection (although I'm not using wireless).
I noticed that the indicator light on the front was showing that wireless was enabled and working. As I didn't want wireless, or the risk of any local hackers, I went back into the menu and under 'setup' there is an option 'wireless'. Click this for the 'enable'/'disable' facility. A simple switch on the back of the box would have been easier to find but this is a very minor niggle on a great piece of kit.

Excellent piece of kit June 13, 2010 A. R. Jaffer (UK) I purchased this one because the original one supplied by my isp did not have wireless.
I configured it and it connected immediately without any issues.
Extremely good value for money from a well known manufacturer.
The economical way to wireless December 24, 2009 Roger (Colchester) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've used one of these for around 3 years before it failed on me last week (I think snow got into it!) and I didn't hesitate to buy this identical model as a replacement.
Some people have problems with setup, and I can understand why. The router is simple to connect in principle, and comes with a setup wizard which should sort everything out. However, the wizard may not even start unless certain settings are adjusted, particularly under the `connections' tab of your internet browser's `options/properties' window. `Never dial a connection' should be checked and, under LAN settings, all boxes should be left clear. True, this is covered in a list of FAQs on the accompanying CD-ROM manual but isn't this the sort of thing a wizard should be able to sort out?
Once you get the wizard going, it sets up the internet connection quite well. However, it doesn't give you the chance to adjust any settings, particularly the option to protect the network; you have to work your way through the settings menus to do this. Then you have to refer to the manual, and wrestle with terms such as WEP-TKIP and hexidecimal keys. None of this should be a problem for the PC `enthusiast', but I can see why inexperienced users may concluded the modem isn't working.
Still, once set up it functions well in my experience. All wireless networks seem to experience the occasional drop-out, for whatever reason, and the Belkin is no exception, but it's been the odd problem every 5 or 6 months rather than every other day for example. Simple rebooting of the router has always fixed any problems (or disabling then re-enabling the network from within windows if you prefer).
My needs are simple; there is one other PC and a laptop to which my wife occasionally connects, and I have set up a remote printer through this. But I have no experience of gaming, for instance. Given that I've never read a review of any piece of wireless equipment which receives 100% backing, I've never seen the need to invest more than the relatively low price I paid for the Belkin. Once set up, it works very well.
